Let the Children Come to Me: A Luke 18 Devotional

Let the Children Come to Me

15 Now they were bringing even infants to him that he might touch them. And when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them. 16 But Jesus called them to him, saying, “Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. 17 Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.”

Luke 18:15-17 (ESV)

Hello friends! A quick note on Luke 18 today:

Scripture here says people were bringing "even infants" to Jesus. He says let them come, the kingdom belongs to those such as these.

My ESV study Bible says Jesus's attitude toward children - welcoming, loving, accepting - was in sharp contrast to that of the Jewish leaders, who saw children as a burden until they were strong enough to contribute to a family.

How convicting, in our culture, to know that Christlikeness means viewing children as blessings, as wonderful because of their trust, acceptance, and dependence, instead of seeing them as burdens. It's also convicting to know that Jesus values those same traits in adults when we value rational thought, skepticism, cynicism, and productivity.

The mind and body do not make us worthy, the heart does. We should look to the hearts of our littlest citizens, our littlest family members, as guidance here. Culture WILL lead you astray in this instance. What matters to western culture is not what matters to God Almighty.
