The LORD Cares: Jairus's Daughter, a Luke 8 Devotional

49 While he was still speaking, someone from the ruler's house came and said, "Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any more. 50 But Jesus on hearing this answered him, "Do not fear; only believe and she will be well." 51 And when he came to the house, he allowed no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child. 52 And all were weeping and mourning for her, but he said, "Do not weep, for she is not dead but sleeping." 53 And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. 54 But taking her by the hand he called, saying, "Child, arise." 55 And her spirit returned, and she got up at once. And he directed that something should be given her to eat.

Luke 8: 49-55, ESV

Hello lovelies!

A quick devotional for today's post:

The LORD Cares: Jairus's Daughter, a Luke 8 Devotional

In Luke 8, Jesus is on his way to heal Jairus's daughter when he's stopped by a woman with a flow of blood touching the hem of his garment and receiving physical healing. This delay brings the news that Jairus's daughter has already died - Jesus is no longer needed in their home.

Jesus goes anyway. He raises the little girl from the dead.

Then he says she should be given something to eat.

I was struck by this small detail as I read through this passage recently. Luke is full of healing miracles. Jesus teaches and does big things. Impressive things people will run and tell entire neighborhoods about. These are news story-worthy happenings.

And in the middle of all of that, Jesus recognizes that a little girl who's been through an ordeal could probably use a snack. He knows food replenishes our bodies and spirits for the day ahead of us. It gives us the energy to work, to meet the day with the focus to do all things routine and occasional things surprising.

Jesus cares. Our Father in Heaven cares. He is an almighty God, a perfect healer, and He also cares about every moment in time that we might need a meal. He cares about our bodies having the energy to move ahead. He cares, and He says it out loud. He looks around at the room of people who have just witnessed a news story and reminds them that a little food wouldn't hurt. He reminds the grownups that they shouldn't get so swept up in the miracles that they forget to feed the babies.

So the next time you're feeling down or maybe seeing big, impressive things happening in the lives around you, consider that you might be in a moment where our Lord is putting His attention into your next meal instead of your next miracle.

He cares about both.

All the love,

Emily
